Through our documentaries and virtual museum experience video games, we focus on not only telling exciting stories, but telling them accurately and definitively. We work closely with historians, we put boots on the ground through meticulous field work, and our in-house animation team takes the history and brings it to life in thrilling full color.

Our research and recreations are published in documentary form on our official YouTube channel, Part-Time Explorer, with nearly half a million subscribers.

We approach every topic with extensive research and a strong working knowledge – yet we never rely on our perspective alone. By partnering with subject-matter experts, we make sure each project reflects the best available knowledge and gets the story right.
Teamwork
Our team is made up of documentarians, digital modelers, artists, historians, and video game programmers. We work together to present a unique perspective on the historical subjects that we cover, often collaborating with the experts and historical groups who know the subject best.
Subject Diversity
From iconic shipwrecks like Titanic and Lusitania to disasters nearly forgotten by history, our team explores stories across a remarkable spectrum. Railroad tragedies, natural disasters such as the Great Johnstown Flood and the Frank Slide, and the legends of lost ghost towns all become part of a broader mission: uncovering the past and bringing it vividly back to life.

Thanks for stopping by! If you’re here, chances are that means that you have something in common with us: a common love of history.
I’m Tom Lynskey, and together with my team, I create documentary films and virtual museum experiences designed to share that passion with the world. The work we do at HFX Studios focuses on history, often centered around two core themes: history and exploration. While many of our projects explore maritime stories and forgotten ghost towns, those subjects are only part of a broader mission: uncovering places, people, and events that reveal how human lives were shaped by challenge, risk, and discovery.
A ship at sea and a deserted town in the wilderness may seem worlds apart, but they share a common thread: isolation, uncertainty, and the need to rely on skill and one another. These are stories about people who faced the elements head-on, built lives in unforgiving environments, and left behind lessons that still matter today.
Our audience responds to this approach because they can feel the enthusiasm and care behind every project. We don’t skim the surface or rely on quick summaries and flashy visuals. Instead, we work to tell each story as accurately and thoroughly as possible, with special emphasis on research, collaboration, and a respect for the people and events that we document.

In the course of analyzing a historical subject, our team works with specialists in the field.
We take nothing for granted when we start a project. Our years of analysis and work on the Lusitania disaster, for example, completely revised our understanding of the entire event, and resulted in a new two-volume history book based on our findings.

In today’s “TikTok” world, capturing (and keeping!) attention is key.
A key element of our work is our ability to make history interesting. By allowing people to explore a subject in color, in motion, the way that it really happened, we take history from “old and moldy” to “fresh and exciting”.
